What to record in a forex trading journal before entry

Record instrument, timeframe, date, session hours and plan version. Describe the situation in one or two sentences: which conditions have occurred and which confirmation is still missing? Add entry, invalidation, order size and the amount of planned risk.

If taking a chart screenshot, save the view available at the decision rather than only the completed move. This prevents later information being written into the original explanation. An essay is unnecessary. A brief, repeatable template is usually more useful than a handful of elaborate entries followed by long gaps.

02

What to add after closing a trade

Add the actual exit price and time, costs, result and reason for closing. Check whether execution matched assumptions and whether SL or TP adjustments followed a rule. Record deviations without trying to justify them through a favourable later outcome.

Describe emotions through specific behaviour: an extra order after a loss, a rushed entry or an omitted check. “Stress” alone is harder to turn into a procedural improvement. Choose one behaviour to improve and record how you will check it during the next session.

03

R-multiples: comparing trades with different risk

R represents the risk unit defined in advance. If initial planned risk was $50 and the closed net result was $75, the outcome is +1.5R. A net loss of $60 would be −1.2R. Costs and slippage can make a losing result worse than −1R.

Do not shrink the denominator after moving a stop just to make a record look better. Comparison requires retaining initial R and distinguishing gross from net outcomes. The amounts here are hypothetical. If initial risk was never defined, do not invent a precise R-multiple from a convenient assumption after closing.

04

Review the week: process and outcome separately

Group trades by setup and adherence to the plan. Look for repeated deviations and whether certain hours or events affect execution. Consider averages alongside observation count and dispersion, rather than focusing on the largest winner.

Choose one process change to check next week

Small samples can mislead. A few profitable trades do not establish that a new rule works. Before changing a rule, write a hypothesis and a way to test it further. The journal helps identify questions for investigation; it does not automatically discover an edge.

05

Use the Trader Journal in the app

Use the Trader Journal for session results and notes, and the Pre-trade Checklist before entry. Instrument and entry currency help comparison, but notes should still explain assumptions and deviations. Calendar profit and loss provide a starting point for review rather than a complete explanation.

Keep demo and live results identifiable instead of automatically combining them. Label the session type and note costs that an exercise may not reproduce. Check account saves and available export options regularly. A useful entry should remain understandable when you return to it several weeks later.

Questions and answers

Should losing trades be recorded?

Yes. Omitting losses and deviations distorts a review. Important decisions to stay out of the market can also be useful records.

Does a journal alone establish a successful strategy?

No. It provides material for analysis. Comparable rules, an adequate sample and execution costs still matter.

How should I review my forex trading journal each week?

Group comparable trades by setup and plan version. Separate rule compliance from R-multiple results and costs. Identify a repeated deviation, choose one process adjustment and record how you will check it in future practice. A small weekly sample is insufficient to establish a lasting strategy edge.
